Enjoy the Moment, Find Your Wonder

16 May

Because of the seemingly constant stress of being in an extended job search, it can be difficult to enjoy the small things in life. Although you may feel at times beaten down, defeated, and hopeless, don’t let this be your normal state of being. Allow yourself to enjoy this time, and take notice of the positive things that have shown up in your life during this challenging time. Sometimes you have to be still to recognize the small blessings.

Last summer I took a mindfulness/meditation class at a local university which was a great lesson in learning how to slow down your mind (still a work in progress for me) and enjoy the present moment. Do you stop to appreciate the smell of your coffee in the morning, the beauty of the spring buds on the trees, or the chill of the spring morning air? We often walk through life on busyness mode without really stopping to appreciate the wonder of small things. As I have mentioned before, this is one of the reasons why I think kids are so great. They still have that wonder. They literally stop to smell flowers, and they get excited about jumping in puddles, and walking in the rain.

Use this time to embrace the break that you are getting from the daily grind, and find your wonder again. Although this time can be stressful, and there is a desire to get back to a “normal life”, don’t shortchange this time that you have that is a break from the busyness, and daily routine. You have an opportunity to slow down and appreciate the small things in life.

You still need to be doing all of the work that is needed for a job search, but let yourself enjoy this time too. When the work is done, appreciate the time that you have. Play in the rain, eat ice cream for dinner, and dig in the dirt. Slow down, find your wonder, and allow yourself to enjoy this moment. You will again have career position, and you’ll be back in the busyness, so allow yourself to enjoy this break that you may not want, but you have anyway. Let go of the stress, still your mind, and appreciate the small things.

    A good point to remember!

Best part about this time is no work:) Sometimes when you’re working, you’re thinking to yourself, I just wish I had a 2 month break. But during periods of unemployment we can actually enjoy, or at least appreciate the time off.

Solid advice not only for extended job searches but when you’re working too:)

Thanks Vishnu! Oh, the irony of how much time we spend thinking about having a break when we are working!

Good advice for recent college grads who are struggling with being underemployed and/or being permanent interns with odd hours. There can be good to be savored amongst that situation, if we can just remember to look for it.

Who doesn’t need this reminder daily! Thank you Lisa!

For me personally, I flow better with peaks and troughs. So often, being busy is the best thing for me, and then slowing down for a while is good. This pattern works for me.

It is easy, however, to get caught up in the rush of life (whether working, or looking for work) and forget to just enjoy it.

It’s a difficult message to give to job-seekers though, because the stress of it takes its toll. However, no time is a constant and change will come! And in the mean time, let’s do what Lisa advises !
