Spring Flowers, Resilience, and New Beginnings

12 May

I don’t think I have ever appreciated spring flowers as much as I do this year. After an incredibly long winter, made seemingly longer by unemployment, seeing flowers come up this spring feels like a miracle. I have some perennial flowers planted near my back patio, and every year when the plants are still brown and battered from the brutal winter, I think that there is no way that I will have blooming flowers. But every year the flowers are back, a remarkable symbol of resilience and new beginnings.

I was thinking about these flowers the other day, and how the human spirit is just as resilient as the flowers that bloom every year, regardless of the harshness of the conditions. Being unemployed or underemployed at times is a test of the human spirit. At times you will feel like giving up, and you’ll wonder how much longer you’ll have to endure and be strong. You’ll wonder if you will ever have a “normal life” again, and when this test of your spirit will end. But,  just as the flowers that bloom every year, we too find a way to be resilient and have many new beginnings.

When you feel like you don’t have it in you to pursue another job opportunity, hustle your way to a new writing gig, or find a contract project, you somehow find a way to reinvent yourself. You find the strength within yourself to withstand the harsh conditions, and have your new beginning. Just like the spring flowers that endure the harshest of winters and bloom, you too are blooming. You are blooming in ways that you can’t see yet, but the beauty is there inside you.

You are resilient and strong, and no matter the harshness of the conditions, you find a way to bloom.
